2010 Lincoln MKZ: Fusion Plus A Newish Nose [2010 Lincoln MKZ]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 8:11 pm

Since platform pals the 2010 Ford Fusion and 2010 Mercury Milan get matching updates, it stands to reason their higher class sibling the 2010 Lincoln MKZ would be getting a visit from Ford’s refresh fairies and these are the results. The MKZ gets Lincoln MKS in its Fusion with an appropriation of the new dual-nostril, waterfalling ‘38 Zephyr grille. As the top-range model in the lineup the MKZ wears the most lavish interior, the smoothest suspension, and the biggest price tag. Read through the press release below and decide for yourself, does the new MKZ provide enough of a upgrade to warrant the additional purchase price? You decide.

2010 Lincoln MKZ builds on success with new interior, more features, more quiet experience

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2008 – Customers who have come to equate Lincoln with elegant, modern design, unparalleled comfort, unrivaled features and top quality have still more reason to favor the brand: the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ mid-size sedan.

“The new MKZ improves on the success of the current vehicle with Lincoln’s new signature look, appointments that amplify and expand the Lincoln portfolio and a faster, more refined powertrain,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.
New for 2010, the MKZ features a new sport version with special sport suspension tuning with stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels, unique grille, darkened headlamps, a decklid MKZ badge with a red “Z” and an interior with contrasting piping and unique appliqués.

The new Lincoln MKZ also offers segment-exclusive features, including first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), which makes navigating traffic and parking lots safer and easier.

BLIS tracks vehicles in the blind-spot zones on either side of the vehicle using two multiple-beam radar modules behind the rear fenders. Indicator lights in the outside rear-view mirror on both sides of the vehicle warn the driver when a vehicle enters the defined blind-spot zone, extending from the side mirror to 10 feet behind the vehicle and 10 feet away from the vehicle.

CTA uses the BLIS radar sensors to alert the driver of approaching traffic while in reverse and backing out of a parking spot. The CTA tracks up to 65 feet on either side of the vehicle and warns the driver through both audible and visual alerts.

In addition to this new technology for mid-size sedans, MKZ offers SYNC, Next-Generation Voice-Activated Navigation, keyless entry, Easy Fuel™ capless fuel filler, THX-branded audio and adaptive headlamps.

The new MKZ also features Lincoln signature design elements, including the split-wing grille and thinner wraparound head lamps for a wider, sportier look. Its chamfered front fascia mirrors the MKS, with a sculpted hood and ridges flowing into the A-pillar. In the rear, which features a new decklid, LED taillamps accentuate the width of the car, separated by the Lincoln star.

The Lincoln MKZ’s presence is enhanced by 17-inch aluminum wheels, available 17-inch chrome wheels, and available 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, which are included in the Sport Appearance Package with sport-tuned suspension.
Inside, MKZ’s cabin reflects and even more upscale look, featuring more chrome, genuine aluminum and wood depending on the trim package, an all-new instrument panel, detailed touches including new welcome lighting, chimes, tuxedo stitching on luxury leather seats and Bridge of Weir leather.

The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland, pioneered on the classic Lincoln Continental Mark II and used on the MKS, wraps the MKZ seats. The MKZ leather is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through.

The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a buttery soft hand, and Bridge of Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

“We’ve increased the luxury feel and improved on what was already a great interior,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. “We have a new interior theme with all-new primary touchpoints, complemented by new features and technologies that make the 2010 Lincoln MKZ stand out in the competitive mid-size segment.”

Additions or improvements to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ interior include:
Armrest clamshell storage
New instrument cluster layout with center speedometer
New door trim with 360-degree door handles
Redesigned center stack with high-mounted, Next-Generation Navigation system
Leather-wrapped steering wheel with real wood insert
Available perforated suede seat style
Interior schemes include Dark Charcoal or Steel Gray with Swirl Walnut accents, or Light Camel with Olive Ash wood accents

Technology and information at your fingertips
The new Lincoln MKZ is more than just a pretty face and striking new interior. New technology features help Lincoln’s new mid-size sedan stand out, too. They include:
SYNC: The voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. The system fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities – plus new 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report provided with no monthly fees.
911 Assist: When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, the system is ready to assist in placing a call directly to a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag-deploying accident. The key advantage of SYNC 911 Assist is speed, as calls are placed directly to local 911 operators.
Vehicle Health Report (VHR): SYNC gathers relevant information from the major vehicle control modules and packages diagnostic data into a usable format in a matter of minutes. That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer’s paired and operable mobile phone.
Voice-Activated Navigation, which integrates several functions including voice recognition destination entry, climate control and SIRIUS satellite radio into one easy-to-use system, displaying them on an 8-inch touch-screen display. The navigation system’s text-to-speech function calls out street names while in route to a destination and reads incoming text messages when the system is linked to SYNC. The integrated DVD player is capable of reading CD-Audio, MP3 CDs, DVD, DVD-Audio and DVD-ROM (for digital map updates). A music jukebox function stores more than 150 hours of music. The screen even can be customized with personal photos.
SIRIUS® Travel Link™, an industry-leading technology that, when combined with the voice-activated navigation system will provide users with real-time traffic data with accident and incident information, coast-to-coast weather data including current conditions and five-day forecasts, and fuel price information for over 120,000 gas stations.
Travel Link also offers sports scores and schedules and a listing of more than 4,500 movie theaters with movie times, theater addresses, movie synopses and more.
Reverse Camera System mounts a small camera on the decklid that is activated when the Lincoln MKZ is shifted into reverse, giving the driver a clear view behind the vehicle.

The video image is displayed in the optional navigation screen on Lincoln MKZs equipped with that option or in the self-dimming rearview mirror vehicles without navigation.
Ambient Lighting System is displayed around the footwells, cup holders, door map pockets, door release handles, door and instrument accents and scuff plates – plus special “Welcome” and “Farewell” sequential lighting.
THX II Premium Certified Audio System with 5.1 Surround Sound, which is provided by a 12-channel amplifier that delivers 600 watts to 14 strategically placed speakers, including two subwoofers. A center channel speaker array features THX Slot Speaker™ technology, which allows for a wider sound image and better control of how music distributed throughout the vehicle’s acoustically engineered cabin. In addition, the system features a 10 GB hard drive jukebox, allowing Lincoln owners to store up to 2,400 of their favorite music tracks.

Other features for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ include:
Rain-sensing wipers, which detect moisture on the windshield and are activated.
A new cabin air filter, which removes respiratory irritants and toxins caused by traffic and industrial pollution. Additionally, the air filter protects the HVAC/climate control system by blocking water and moisture.
Segment-exclusive Adaptive HID headlamps, which rotate according to speed and steering inputs to allow greater visibility around turns
SOS Post Crash Alert, which activates the horn, emergency flashers, automatically unlocks doors and turns on the interior/puddle lamps when an air bag is deployed. The system activates the emergency flashers when a spinout is detected.

Faster engine performance, strong fuel economy
The award-winning 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engine powers the 2010 Lincoln MKZ, delivering 263 horsepower and 249 pounds-feet of torque. The 3.5-liter uses a compact, lightweight dual-overhead cam valvetrain for peak power and smooth operation at high RPMs.

This engine also incorporates intake variable cam timing to optimize valve timing for a smooth idle and an impressive broad torque curve with good power.

The six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, which is front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive availability, is standard on the 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Powertrain performance is improved dramatically, with 0-60 mph times dropping from 7.7 to 7.1 seconds.

The engine – and the MKZ itself – is quieter. Every piece of sound packing was redone.

“The customer definitely should notice how quiet the new MKZ is,” said Chief Engineer J.D. Shanahan. “That’s important – especially in the luxury sedan buyers who perceive that quietness equates to quality.”

The MKZ engineering team also concentrated on the engine mount subsystem, finding the sound that balances sportiness and luxury, said Matt Hettenhouse, powertrain team leader.

A high 10.3:1 compression ratio and aluminum cylinder heads designed for high air flow and optimized combustion help complete the package, supporting the engine’s ability to deliver great performance and fuel economy, along with low emissions.

Unique to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ are re-engineered resonators on the air-induction system. “They deliver the powerful, refined sound Lincoln MKZ customers expect,” Hettenhouse said.

The six-speed transmission allows for lower early gears for better acceleration and taller high gears for better highway mileage. Downshifts are locked out to protect the engine from over-revving. The “enhanced overdrive cancel” mode locks out the fifth and sixth gears, allows shifts at higher speed for more engine braking and downshifts for “grade assist” functionality.

Unique tuning, too
The 2010 Lincoln MKZ was completely revised and uniquely tuned for ride comfort.
The team changed the rear suspension in the lower control arm control point to move the roll center closer to the center of gravity, which improved the ride-handling characteristics. A hydraulic variable-flow steering pump changes the flow rate at lower speeds to give better response, improving the turning circle and easier parking efforts.

The Lincoln MKZ’s available all-wheel drive (AWD) system has been retuned for better traction and lower noise, vibration and harshness. The system uses an electro-mechanical clutch and employs two basic modes of torque transfer – pre-emptive torque (before wheel slip) and slip-control torque (after wheel slip). This dual system gives the driver confidence in any situation, while the suspension has been specially tuned to be more neutral when cornering.

“When the Lincoln MKZ accelerates, even lightly, from a stop on any surface – dry pavement, wet pavement, sand, gravel, ice, mud – pre-emptive torque is transferred to the rear wheels,” said Jim Fritz, AWD product development engineer. “As an added measure to control front wheel slip on slippery surfaces, slip control torque is added to equalize front and rear wheel speeds.”

The AWD system works in harmony with brake traction control to deliver more confidence to Lincoln MKZ customers. Ford’s AdvanceTrac electronic stability control keeps drivers in command as well.

“The driving experience has been improved, delivering a better ride and vehicle control,” Shanahan said. “Ride enhancements, a new sport package, new technologies, the signature Lincoln design and a strong quality story help the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ set a new standard in mid-size luxury sedans.”

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ is built at Ford’s Hermosillo (Mexico) Stamping and Assembly Plant and will be in dealer showrooms in spring 2009.

2010 Ford Fusion, Sport, Hybrid Revealed Live [2010 Ford Fusion]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 8:11 pm

We gave you all the details on the 2010 Ford Fusion, Fusion Sport, and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at the break of day and now we’ve got the live reveal from the floor of the LA Auto Show. The trio of Fusionistas made their debut moments ago to bombastic loads of PR praise. If the improvements Ford is touting stand up to scrutiny, the Fusion stands to make some serious waves in the C/D sedan segment. We approve pretty solidly of the styling changes, the six speed manual and auto on the regular Fusion and the well thought out hybrid system on the twin powered model.

All this brings us to a point that has to be made. We can’t assume the car performs up to snuff yet, but we’ll cross that bridge when it comes. Assuming it does perform, cars like this are a loud middle finger to everyone who doubts Americans can build desirable, competitive, fun cars. If the American public doesn’t respond to efforts like this, they deserve to drive the soulless appliances they seem to prefer these days.

2009 Nissan 370Z Revealed Live With Details [2009 Nissan 370z]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 7:11 pm

We got a great look at the new Z-car when Wes went out and bagged the 2009 Nissan 370Z at that exclusive LA enthusiast party, and now we’ve got the details to back up these brand new live reveal shots from the floor of the LA Auto Show. The new 370Z gets added oomph to match the more muscular and compact looks with the now 3.7 liter V6 getting 332 HP and 270 lb-ft of torque to match the six speed manual or a 7-speed automatic with “Downshift Rev Matching” all riding on top of a car 225 lbs lighter than it’s predecessor. Conveniently, Nissan has provided an afternoon’s reading for everyone which we’ve included below. There is much to digest about this car and all of it tastes pretty good so far, but as with any car, the proof will be in the driving.

All-New 2009 Nissan Z®: Sculpted, Engineered and Equipped to SHIFT_ Driving Excitement
– Super Evolution of the Iconic Nissan Z®Expands the Sports Car “Sweet Spot” With An Unmatched Balance of Performance, Style and Value

In the first full redesign of the iconic Nissan Z® since its re-introduction as a 2003
model, nearly every piece and component has been rethought or redesigned –
shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, new engine with more
horsepower and improved fuel economy, a new 7-speed automatic transmission with
paddle shifters, a world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system for the
manual transmission, new high quality driver-centric interior and new available
technology features.
But to get the full measure of the new model, now designated the Nissan 370Z, one
need look no farther than the subtle upswept line of the new rear quarter window.
Quintessentially Z®, the window harkens back to the original 1970 240Z – a car that
revolutionized the sports car world with its unique combination of performance, style
and, especially, value. The new 370Z solidifies the Z®’s position as one of the most
desirable sports cars on the planet – at an affordable price – bringing true sports car
performance to everyone.
“The fresh character of the 2009 Nissan 370Z is immediately apparent in the crisp
new exterior design, which is sportier yet still immensely identifiable as a Nissan Z
®,” said Al Castignetti, vice president, Sales, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.
“One usually thinks of evolution as being linear. The new 370Z’s ‘super evolution’
builds on the best features of both the first and last generations Z–cars – respectful
but not retro, simple yet sophisticated, and 110 percent pure Z®.”
Solidifying the strengths of its immediate predecessor, the new 370Z was conceived
as an “Everyday Sports Car,” targeting segment-leading performance and a base

MSRP of around $30,000 (final performance figures and pricing to be available at a
later date).
“The new 370Z lives in the sweet spot of performance, style and value, a position
that Nissan invented with the original Z® . It’s an authentic sports car that you don’t
have to make sacrifices to own – or drive everyday,” said Castignetti.
The new 2009 Nissan 370Z Coupe model is scheduled to go on sale in North America
in January 2009, followed by a new 370Z Roadster for the 2010 model year.

The New Exterior: Not Just Sculptural, Functional
The 2009 370Z’s dynamic new styling offers dual benefits – a more aggressive
appearance and a lighter, tighter structure for enhanced performance. The new Z’s
wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter than the previous generation Z® (100.4
inches versus 104.3 inches), accomplished by moving the rear wheels forward in the 2nd
generation FM platform, while overall length is reduced by 2.7 inches (167.1
inches versus 169.8 inches). At the same time, the overall width been increased by
1.3 inches, the rear track by 2.2 inches and overall height reduced by 0.3 inches,
giving the 370Z a much more aggressive stance.
The more compact exterior dimensions and expanded use of lightweight materials
help reduce weight. For the first time, the Z® features aluminum door panels, along
with an all-aluminum hood (the previous aluminum hood design utilized steel
reinforcements) and an aluminum hatch.
At the same time, the body structure was extensively revised, improving front body
torsion rigidity by 30 percent; a new front suspension cradle to reduce front body
lateral bending; new rear structural reinforcements; and an underbody “V-bar” to
help reduce rear lateral bending. Other enhancements include the use of a carbon
fiber composite radiator housing and strengthening of the rear fender and hatch
areas.
Rear body torsion rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical
bending rigidity is improved by up to 30 percent. The result is enhanced overall
solidity and handling capability. Even with all of the new body strengthening
measures the overall body-in-white is lighter than the previous body-in-white.
“As every race car driver knows, weight is the enemy of performance and rigidity is
the foundation for handling – but they usually work at cross purposes from each
other,” said Castignetti. “With the new 370Z, the engineers were able to build a
body that is both stronger and lighter, enhancing Z® ’s athletic performance abilities.”
Along with its new structure and stance, the 370Z has a taut new skin – one that
looks completely new, yet completely Z®. The exterior design incorporates
intentional 240Z styling cues, a sleek aerodynamic shape, a “dynamic motion” feel
with a dramatic cantilevered roof (with Nissan GT-R styling cues) and a “low visual
gravity.”
The coefficient of drag is 0.30 (0.29 with the Sport Package), the same as the
previous generation 350Z Coupe. The new Z® also maintains the previous
generation’s zero front lift and zero rear lift when equipped with the rear spoiler,
thanks to extensive aerodynamics efforts – including an “inverse area” front bumper
design which smoothes the flow of air to the sides of the vehicle, while the rear
design maximizes the control of air flow from the roof to the rear hatch. In addition,
the front overhang was extended 1.2 inches and more than 200 rear quarter panel
patterns were made and wind tunnel tested to counter the negative aerodynamic
effects of shortening the wheelbase (versus the 350Z).
“The 370Z incorporates all of the signature Z® elements – the long nose, canopy
cockpit, muscular fenders, vertical door handles,” said Castignetti. “What’s new is a
more wheel-oriented, organic design with more of a sense of precision and agility.”
One of the most distinctive features of the bold new exterior design is the
headlight/taillight treatment, which features a fierce “boomerang” shape. High
Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are
standard.

The hood’s deep character lines continue over the windshield into the new,
cantilevered roof design. The intense broad-shouldered rear shape is highlighted by
the integration of the boomerang taillights and wide, flared rear fenders.
The 370Z’s sleek silhouette is defined by its upswept quarter window design that is
echoed by the dynamic upward curvature in the lower rocker panel and the sense of
the taut sheet metal molding itself around the wheels and frame. Attention to detail
and functionality is evident throughout the exterior design, including the addition of
a flashing (repeater lamp) side marker lamp/emblem.
Performance body pieces are available as part of the optional Sport Package,
including a front chin spoiler and rear spoiler. The 370Z is offered in seven exterior
colors: Pearl White, Monterey Blue, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Black, Solid Red,
Platinum Graphite and a launch-year only, premium signature color, Chicane Yellow.
A Driver’s Cockpit Equipped To Make Car and Driver Feel Like One
The interior design of the new 370Z continues the Z® tradition of enhancing driving
pleasure, no matter what the road or traffic conditions offer. “As an Everyday Sports
Car, every aspect of the interior needs to address two needs – support and enhanced
driver performance during spirited driving and offer high levels of comfort and utility
for normal commuting and around-town activities,” said Castignetti.
The traditional 2-seat layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with
a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger’s seat. In the rear
is an open cargo area with enhanced storage and accessibility. The design focus
incorporates a “layer concept,” with an information layer, an operation layer and a
holding layer.
The information layer provides enhanced visibility with easy access to all key data.
The gauges are once again attached to the steering column, so the driver doesn’t
have to choose between the perfect steering wheel position and visibility of the
gauges. The upper steering wheel opening in front of the gauges was also enlarged
to provide a better view of the readouts.

Gauge size has been increased over the previous generation design, including a 15
percent increase in the tachometer, and the gauge angle has been adjusted.
The instrument panel retains the traditional 3-pod cluster with oil temperature,
voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer now include an “initial
sweep” function, coming alive when the Z® is first started.
The operation layer includes the steering wheel, shifter and switchgear. The steering
wheel is an all-new “oval” 3-spoke design, which offers baseball-style stitching,
improved thumb grips and palm rest areas for improved feel on long drives. The
surface of the leather-wrapped wheel is “shaved” to provide a more kidney-like
shape to better fit in the hand. The shifter was also redesigned, with the manual
transmission shifter padded in different areas to improve the accuracy of diagonal
shifts and to feel softer in the hand for forward and backward motions.
The holding layer includes the seats, knee pads and door trim support. The driver’s
seat is uniquely different from the passenger’s seat, with lower seat cushion cut-outs
on the sides where the thighs rest – allowing the driver to push on the pedals
without the seat fighting them. The seat also features an improved frame that helps
it to better hold the driver in place during cornering. It also offers a 0.4-inch lower
hip point than the previous Z® driver’s seat.
Both the driver and passenger’s seats are structured with an anti-slip material in the
main seating surface. The sporty woven cloth seats feature standard 8-way
driver’s/4-way passenger manual adjustments, with heated 4-way power-adjustable
leather-appointed seats standard with the 370Z Touring model. Adjustable front
seat Active Head Restraints are also standard.
The door armrests have been designed to provide extra support when cornering and
the kneepads are better integrated to help the driver maintain the proper position
while cornering.

In addition, the available aluminum pedal pads utilize a new rubber insert material to
improve grip and the accelerator pedal and brake pedal are completely new. The
accelerator pedal is now floor-mounted (versus hanging) to provide better contact
with the foot, less effort to operate and easier pedal-to-pedal foot/heel movement.
The brake pedal is a new variable ratio design with enhanced rigidity and easier
operation.
Interior packaging is also enhanced from the previous generation, including the
removal of the rear strut brace (replaced with less intrusive structural
reinforcements) and by adding a new “shelf” area behind the seats, creating an ideal
area for storing briefcases. A retractable cover is standard on the 370Z Touring
model. A locking glove compartment has been added.
Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key™
with Push Button Start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power
door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a new non-intrusive
cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-
volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in center console), dual
overhead map lights and a AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated
steering wheel-mounted controls.
The 370Z Touring model adds standard 4-way power adjustable heated synthetic
suede and leather-appointed sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, 6CD Bose
audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback,
XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver and passenger seat mappocket. An optional Navigation Package includes the touch-screen Nissan Hard DriveNavigation System with XM NavTraffic® with Real-Time Traffic information (XM® subscription required, sold separately), 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive and Interface System for iPod®. The 370Z interior is available Black cloth or for 370Z Touring models, a choice of Gray, Black or Persimmon leather-appointed seating.

“Of all the tremendous enhancements to the new Z® interior, one that is easy to
overlook is the enhanced quality – both in fit and finish and in the quality of
materials and designs,” said Castignetti. “Z® is proving once again that outstanding
performance is available at an affordable price and so is outstanding quality.”
Taking Performance To A New Level
Since so many aspects of a sports car’s performance come down to the simple
formulation of power-to-weight, the engineering teams behind the development of
the new 370Z made that their priority focus. On the weight reduction side of the
equation, they put the new Z® on an extremely restrictive diet. Beyond just the
pounds shed with the body-in-white, every component throughout the vehicle was
scrutinized. For example, fuel tank weight was reduced by 13.9 pounds, the exhaust
system by 3.8 pounds, the audio system by 3.5 pounds and the 19-inch wheels by
approximately seven pounds each for the fronts and six pounds for the rears – an
estimated 225 pounds total.
Along with the reduced weight, the center of gravity was lowered through use of a
lower engine positioning (-0.6 inches) and lower driver hip point (-0.4 inches).
Rotating mass was reduced with a shorter carbon-fiber composite driveshaft. All of
these weight savings were needed, of course, to counter the added weight of the
Z®’s enhanced body structure and new technology and safety features. The net
weight reduction is 95 pounds for the 2009 Nissan 370Z over the comparable 350Z
Enthusiast model.
On the power side of the targeted class-leading power-to-weight goal, the new Z®
picks up 26 horsepower utilizing the fourth generation of Nissan’s award-winning VQ-
series V6. The new 3.7-liter VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and
Lift) is rated at 332 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm,
compared with the previous 3.5-liter V6’s 306 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm and 268 lb-
ft of toque @ 4,800 rpm.

Along with its larger displacement, the new engine gives better power delivery all the
way to the 7,500 rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque,
creating an entirely new driving experience. Approximately 35 percent of the
engine’s parts are new, versus the previous design.
Key to the enhanced performance is the VVEL system, which is able to optimize
intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to
the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time.
Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel
efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner
emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing
combustion when the engine is cool. The engine also has a new “growl” from the
dual exhaust system due to reduced back pressure, enhancing driving enjoyment.
The new engine is backed by a choice of two new advanced transmissions, both
designed to improve driver performance. The new close-ratio 6-speed manual
includes an available world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system,
which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gear shift
performance. The “SynchroRev Match” function automatically controls and adjusts
engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially
“blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the
driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and
smoothness by reducing the typical “shock” when the clutch is engaged. The system
can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less
vehicle intervention. The SynchroRev Match system is offered as part of the optional
Sport Package.
“The SynchroRev Match system takes nothing away from the driver – you still have
to engage the clutch and move the shifter – it just gives you a performance edge by
smoothing out the gear engagement,” said Castignetti.
Overall shift feeling has also been improved, with reduced vibration and noise
(accomplished through improved lubrication) and a modification to the lever angle of
the short-throw shifter.

The 370Z’s new 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive
Shift Control (ASC) is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in
manual mode with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts. Drivers can use the
standard paddle shifters or the shift lever. With new torque converter lock-up logic,
the new 7-speed automatic feels more direct, like a manual transmission. The new
7-speed’s wide gear ratios offer improved fuel efficiency, while the Adaptive Shift
Control is designed to adjust to the driver’s driving style.
“The combination of the new 3.7-liter engine and advanced new transmissions puts
the Z® solidly at the front of the class in terms of responsive acceleration,” said
Castignetti. “Add in the enhanced handling from the revised suspension – which
provides better grip, reduced understeer, improved road holding, reduced impact
harshness and better ride – and you’ve got a new standard for thrilling
performance.”
Estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg City/26mpg Highway for both the 7-speed
automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions – increases of 1 mpg City/2 mpg
Highway for the automatic and 1 mpg Highway for the manual transmission versus
the 2008 350Z.
The previous generation Z®’s suspension has also been rethought to reduce weight,
improve strength and improve camber change and lateral displacement. The double-
wishbone front suspension (replacing the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses
lighter forged aluminum arms and a lightweight rigid aluminum-alloy cradle, along
with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio.
The 4-link rear suspension is also now stiffer and lighter, with the rear cradle entirely
integrated into a single part (no welding). All-new “high response” shock absorbers
are utilized on each corner, with ride comfort improved through reduced shock
friction.
The standard 370Z wheel and tire package features 18×8.0-inch front/18×9.0-inch 5-
spoke lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear

front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers.
Steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion
deign that has been reworked (including redesigned mounting bushings and a
column insulator) to provide improved response. Unwanted steering kickback and
vibrations are reduced with the addition of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper
when there is a harsh impact load. The standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
system has also been revised with new electronic hardware and all-new logic.
The Nissan 370Z’s long list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced
Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt

2009 BMW 7-Series, ActiveHybrid Hit LA Show Floor [BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 7:11 pm

BMW rolled out the red carpet for the debut of the new 2009 BMW 7-Series and BMW Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid, both driving across the carpet under power of BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The difference is while the 2009 7-Series moved with the force of 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, the 7-Series ActiveHybid had an additional 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque on tap thanks to the addition of an electric motor. The former will go on sale early next year while the latter is but a concept, though one we believe is close to the design of a future BMW hybrid. Press releases and live photos below.

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid: The BMW of hybrids
As an integral part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid previews the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. In typical BMW fashion, this new concept car combines a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with a level of driving dynamics never seen before even in this class of hybrid cars.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is an intelligent symbiosis of BMW’s new twin-turbo V8 engine and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept. A compact electric motor, integrated into the transmission housing, replaces the conventional alternator as well as the starter. Power to run all electrics on-board the car is generated by means of Brake Energy Regeneration. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor take the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8’s already potent 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and supplies an additional 20 horsepower and up to 155 lb-ft of torque as needed. The drivetrain technology featured in the concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent in the EU test cycle compared to the same car running on a combustion engine alone. At the same time the use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology does not require any compromises in driving qualities and features of the BMW 7 Series.

Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment. An Auto Start Stop function helps to ensure optimum efficiency in all driving situations.

The hybrid technology showcased in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is perfectly suited to the new benchmark in the full-sized performance luxury sedan segment just as the two-mode hybrid technology used in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, also on display in Los Angeles, is well matched to the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe.

BMW 7 Series again sets the benchmark
The all-new fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series radiates a natural presence, inherent sportiness and an elegance born of precision in concept and execution. A new V-8 engine with direct injection and twin turbochargers expresses BMW EfficientDynamics at the highest level of performance. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 delivers 400 hp and 450lb-ft of torque. New, exclusive BMW driver-assistance systems and comfort-related features further add to a truly exceptional driving and riding experience.

Inside the new 7, the ambiance is luxurious, of transcendent quality and - most important of all - inviting. The driver-oriented control center features Black Panel technology. More functions than ever are conveniently accessible to the driver from the multi-function steering wheel.

The new 7 is BMW’s first passenger car with multi-link double-wishbone front suspension. The new Integral V rear suspension incorporates extensive use of aluminum. On the long wheelbase 750Li, self-leveling air suspension is standard. Also new, and a world premiere: Integral Active Steering, which adds speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering. With the standard Driving Dynamics Control, the driver can choose between four settings for shock-absorber firmness, transmission shift characteristics, engine-throttle response and power-steering assist.

An array of innovative driver-assistance options unique in the luxury segment includes Active Cruise Control with new stop-and-go capability, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Head-up Display, High Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with new Pedestrian Detection, Side View and Back-up Cameras.

All of this will make the new 7 once again the benchmark for performance, luxury, efficiency and safety when it arrives in the US in early 2009.

Target Women Tackles Car Advertising, She Dragons [Ad Watch]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 6:11 pm

The “Target Women” series on Current TV may be the only thing worth watching on Al Gore’s television network of the future and we’re exceptionally pleased to see them tackle female-targeted car commercials. It’s a big target given most automotive advertising intended for the woman folk tends to focus on anything but the actual driving characteristics of a given car. We all remember the orgasmic Kate Walsh CTS commercial in which she asked if she could get off by driving the Caddy. The wry host of “Target Women” also treads into our territory by mentioning dragons of the lady variety and their predilection for sensuous cars. So you don’t have to scroll up to channel 947 and wait for three hours we’ve embedded the video below the jump.

All-Electric MINI E Hits LA Auto Show Floor With “Hottest. Deputy Mayor. Ever.” [Mini E]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 6:11 pm

The all-electric MINI E was just revealed live here at the LA Auto Show. Although we already knew it had an expensive lease and we already knew all the details about its two seats (instead of the normal MINI 2+2), 204 HP and 162 lb-ft electric motor and performance of 150 mile round trip and 0-to-60 runs of 8.5 seconds. However, if you weren’t aware of all those goodies there’s a press release below the fold for you. What we didn’t know is that Los Angeles had a Deputy Mayor that’s what Wert’s calling a “Palin-like hottie” and the “Hottest. Deputy Mayor. Ever.” We’re betting the boss-man is having a hard time separating his twin loves of politics and cars at this exact moment.

Check out more on the Mini E from CarandDriver.com

MINI AT THE 2008 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW. THE MINI E.
A new Experience - Driving Pleasure Without Emissions: The MINI E.

MINI E - Technical Specifications.

The BMW Group will be the world’s first manufacturer of premium automobiles to deploy a fleet of some 500 all-electric vehicles for private use in daily traffic. The MINI E will be powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery, transferring its power to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox nearly without a sound and entirely free of emissions. Specially engineered for automobile use, the battery technology will have a range of more than 250 kilometers, or 156 miles. The MINI E will initially be made available to select private and corporate customers as part of a pilot project in the US states of California, New York and New Jersey. The company is looking into expanding the MINI E pilot to include Europe. The MINI E will celebrate its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19 and 20.

The MINI E’s electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Newton meters, delivering seamless acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 152 km/h (95 mph). Featuring a suspension system tuned to match its weight distribution, the MINI E sports the brand’s hallmark agility and outstanding handling.

By introducing the MINI E, the BMW Group is underscoring the resolve with which it works towards reducing energy consumption and emissions in road traffic. The BMW Group is drawing on its unique technological expertise in the field of drive systems to develop a vehicle concept enabling zero emissions without renouncing the joy of driving. Putting some 500 cars on the road under real daily traffic conditions will make it possible to gain widely applicable hands-on experience. Evaluating these findings will generate valuable know-how, which will be factored into the engineering of mass-produced vehicles. The BMW Group aims to start series production of all-electric vehicles over the medium term as part of its Number ONE strategy. The development of innovative concepts for mobility in big-city conurbations within the scope of “project i” has a similar thrust, as its objective also includes making use of an all-electric power train.

The energy storage unit: cutting-edge lithium-ion technology engineered specifically for use in the MINI.
Based on the current MINI, the car will initially be available as a two-seater. The space taken up by back-seat passengers in the series model has been reserved for the lithium-ion battery. When in use in the zero-emissions MINI, the battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and a small footprint with power ratios that are unrivalled in this field of application so far. The lithium-ion storage unit will have a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh) and transmit energy to the electric motor as direct current at a nominal 380 volts. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules. These modules are packaged into three battery elements that are compactly arranged inside the MINI E.

The energy storage unit’s basic components are based on the technological principle that has proven itself in practice in power supplies for mobile phones and portable computers. The MINI E’s lithium-ion battery can be plugged into all standard power outlets. Its charge time is strongly dependent on the voltage and amperage of the electricity flowing through the grid. In the USA, users can recharge a battery that has been completely drained within a very short period of time using a wallbox that will ship with every MINI E. The wallbox will be installed in the customer’s garage, enable higher amperage, and thus provide for extremely short charging times. Wallboxes fully recharge batteries after a mere two-and-a-half hours.

Driven by electricity: reliably, affordably and free of emissions.
A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Based on the car’s range, a kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles. Besides the benefit of zero-emissions driving, the MINI E thus offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine as well.

The heavy-duty battery delivers its power to an electric motor, which transforms it into thrilling agility. Mounted transversely under the MINI E’s bonnet, the drive train unleashes its full thrust from a dead standstill. This provides for the car’s fascinating launch capability. The MINI E’s intense driving experience is augmented by its dynamic deceleration potential, which is also directly coupled to the accelerator pedal. As soon as the driver releases the gas pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force, and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. This interaction ensures extremely comfortable drives - especially at medium speed with constant, but marginal, variation. In city traffic, some 75 percent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy recuperation feature extends the car’s range by up to 20 percent.

Signature MINI agility in a new guise.
Weighing in at 1,465 kilograms (3,230 lbs), the MINI E has an even weight distribution. Minor modifications made to the suspension ensure safe handling at all times. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system has been adapted to this model’s specific wheel loads.
The MINI E’s brake system comes with a newly developed electric underpressure pump. Its Electrical Power Assisted Steering (EPS) is the same as the one used in mass-produced MINIs. Both brake and steering assistance react to driving conditions and are thus extremely efficient. Even the air conditioning’s electrical compressor only operates if desired or necessary.

Design: unmistakably MINI, undoubtedly new.
At first glance, the MINI E is obviously an iteration of the brand. But its design, which is the blueprint for the zero-emissions two-seater, has been complemented by a number of visual cues that point to its revolutionary drive concept. All of the units produced for the pilot project will have the same paintwork and bear a serial number next to their side turn signal lights.
The MINI E’s coachwork sports an exclusive combination of metallic Dark Silver on all panels but the roof, which is clad in Pure Silver. What distinguishes the zero-emissions MINI is a specially designed logo in Interchange Yellow, depicting a stylized power plug in the shape of an “E” set against the silver backdrop. It has been applied to the roof, in smaller dimensions to the front and back, to the charger port lid, the dashboard trim, and - combined with the MINI logo - to the door jamb, in slightly modified form. The color of the roof edges, mirror housings, interior style cues and seat seams will match the logo’s yellow tone as well.

Moreover, the central gauge and the battery level indicator behind the wheel of the MINI E, which replaces the MINI’s rev counter, feature yellow lettering against a dark grey background. The battery level is displayed in percentage figures. The central gauge includes an LED display indicating power consumption in red and power recuperation in green.
MINI E customers will be part of a pioneering mission.

A 500-unit, limited-production MINI E series will be manufactured through the end of 2008. The project will thus attain an order of magnitude that clearly exceeds the size of currently comparable test series. Putting the MINI E on the road on a daily basis will be a pioneering feat to which both the drivers and engineers of the first zero-emissions MINI will contribute as a team.

MINI E customers will join forces with BMW Group experts to assist in the project’s scientific evaluation. MINI E engineers accord high importance to staying in touch with the drivers on a regular basis, as this will help them analyze driver behavior besides vehicle characteristics in order to gain the most accurate and realistic picture of the demands placed on a vehicle with a purely electrical drive in the select usage areas.

Special charging station and full service for every MINI E.
The cars will change hands based on a one-year lease with an extension option. Monthly lease installments will cover any required technical service including all necessary maintenance and the replacement of wearing parts. At the end of the lease, all of the automobiles belonging to the project will be returned to the BMW Group’s engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.
The MINI E’s lithium-ion battery can be charged using a wallbox provided to MINI customers. Only lockable garages or similar buildings will qualify as homebases and power stations for the MINI E.

Maintenance by qualified specialists.
The electric drive’s high-voltage technology requires that maintenance work be done by qualified personnel using special tools that are not included in MINI service partners’ standard toolboxes. In light of this, a service base will be set up on both coasts, staffed by service engineers that are specially trained to perform maintenance and repair work on the MINI E’s electrical components. In the event of drive malfunction, these experts will provide professional support at the customer’s local MINI dealer or the service base’s specially equipped workshop. Technical inspections will take place after 3,000 miles (just under 5,000 kilometers) and at least after six months.

Production in Oxford and Munich.
The MINI E has already gone through the major phases of product development for mass-produced vehicles and passed numerous crash tests on the way. Aspects investigated besides passenger protection were the impact of collision forces on the lithium-ion battery and finding a non-hazardous location for it in the car. The MINI E’s energy storage unit emerged completely unscathed from all of the crash tests mandated by US standards, which are especially high.

Production of the approximately 500 cars will take place at the company’s Oxford and Munich sites and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2008. MINI’s UK plant will be responsible for manufacturing the entire vehicle with the exception of the drive components and the lithium-ion battery, with the brand’s series models rolling off its assembly lines concurrently. The units will then be transferred to a specially equipped manufacturing complex situated on BMW plant premises where the electric motor, battery units, performance electronics and transmission will be integrated.

BMW dropped their hotrod oil burner today at the LA Auto Show, showcasing a twin-turbo 3.0 liter diesel engine that is both quick and clean. Clean enough to be legal in all 50 states while keeping it’s fun factor. Power numbers sit pretty at 265 horses and 425 lbs-ft of torque; just enough to pull the porch off of your buddy’s house, if you so desire. Sprints from 0-60 run at a very non-dieselish six seconds flat while fuel mileage estimates are 23 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the open road. Of course, iDrive is back with an all-new learning curve to bring many hours of knob-spinning glee as you fumble your way through a plethora of menus. Full details in the press release below.

BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance: efficiency and dynamics in abundance
With the introduction of the new BMW Advanced diesel powered 335d and X5 xDrive35d models, the BMW Group announces another step in its strategy for EfficientDynamics. Both models will feature a 50-state emission compliant version of BMW’s award winning sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine - the first performance-oriented and efficient Advanced Diesel engine in BMW’s U.S. line.

The sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine powering both models employs both a very small and a larger turbocharger combined with an innovative intake system enabling the engine to develop 265 hp. Even more impressive are the torque characteristics. Fully 80% of the torque is available from 1100rpm to 4200rpm. The peak torque is 425 lbs-ft at 1750rpm - almost as much as BMW’s 6.0-liter V12. The performance is what the enthusiast would expect from a BMW. The 335d is capable of sprinting from 0 - 60 mph in six seconds flat. The X5 xDrive35d will do it in 6.9 seconds. No other diesels in the US will perform like this pair of BMW Advanced Diesel models.

Coupled with this performance potential is impressive fuel economy. The EPA mileage estimates for the 335d are 23 city and 36 highway. The X5 xDrive35d is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Both offer the convenience of travelling approximately 580 miles between fill-ups.

Thanks to BluePerformance technology, this unparalleled blend of performance and efficiency can only be found in a BMW Advanced Diesel.

A Subtle freshening of exterior design features a new front end, more dynamic profile, and wider rear stance. The refinement of the interior design reflects and complements the distinctive exterior design. Among functional updates are ergonomically enhanced placement of power-window controls for the driver and new, expanded storage possibilities.

The optional onboard navigation system features an all-new iDrive control concept and display. It offers new menus, new direct-select keys and Programmable Memory Keys. Subscribers to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan can access “BMW Search” to quickly find a desired business or other point of interest with just a key word search, using Google search technology and intelligence, even from the convenience of your home or office. Once a destination has been found, route guidance or a hands-free call from a Bluetooth® -linked phone is available at just a simple push of a button.

For 2009, BMW maintains its position as a leader in technology while providing the most innovative blend of performance and fuel economy that are the hallmarks of BMW EfficientDynamics.

What Will Win The LA Auto Show: Hybrids, Convertibles Or High Horsepower? [Question Of The Day]

Filed under: Classic Cars — admin @ 4:11 pm

This year’s LA Auto Show has three major themes: Hybrids, Convertibles and High Horsepower. It’s an intense battle for the hearts and minds of the Los Angelenos, whose hearts want Horsepower, whose minds prefer hybrids and whose weather demands convertibles. Representing the Hybrids are the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid and 2010 Fusion Hybrid twins from Ford and the strange-lookiong Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid. In the High Horsepower corner we have the Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85, 2010 Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z. Convertibles also abound, including the 2009 Porsche Boxster and Mustang Convertible. Who will be king?

Given that this is the LA Auto Show, we’re assuming that the Hollywood producers and financial types that use the auto show to make their Christmas (or Hanukkah) wish-lists don’t have to make those kind of choices. Why chose one when you can have all in one package? That’s where the Lamborghini LP 560-4 Spyder comes in handy. Fast? Check. Topless? Check. Ungodly expensive? Cash or Check!?! Just buy your assistant a 2010 Nissan Cube to help offset your carbon emissions. Why live green when you have all that green to spend?
